Q1:(brenda)
In your own words define the term assistive technology? Give an example of one type of assistive technology.
Assistive Technology means any equipment that can be used to help students with modified needs. However, this also includes the evaluation of the child, purchasing, selecting the appropriate equipment, coordinating the way it is going to be used, training the child, and training the professional person that helps the child. One example of assisitive learing is customized keyboards. This equipment is done for the individual to meet his or her needs.
Q2:(dulce) 2. What are adaptive technologies? Give an example of a type of access technology? Access Technologies are those applications of technologies that provide a way for students with disabilities to better access classroom instructional materials provided as part of the general curriculum. These are devices that adapt the tools or activities used by general education students. These products can compensate for limitations experienced by students with sensory, cognitive and/or physical disabilities. Included here are classroom tools/equipment that has been designed with universal features making them accessible to students with physical, cognitive and/or sensory disabilities. It allows them to have the same instruction as a regular student would and be treated equally. Some examples of this are alternative keyboards, page turners, different input devices and output devices.
Q3:(yesenia)
What are adaptive technologies? Give an example of a type of adaptive technolgies? Adaptive Technologies include customized systems that help individual students move with an easy facility, communicate, and control their environments. These aparatus are designed specifically for persons with disabilities; devices which would be used by non-disabled persons. Some examples are powered wheel chairs and environmental control systems like a teletypwriter. These assistive technologies are not used exclusively for education purposes, but are used in all of the child's environments.
Q4:(Lilly)
What are the implications of IDEA or schools and the use of technology in the classroom?
School districts are required under law to provide appropriate AT to students with disabilities when it supports their acquisition of a free and appropriate public education (FAPE). All children with disablities should be provided with access to IEP's to provide these students access to the general curriculum.
IDEA indicates that AT devices and services must be made available to a child with a disability if required as a part of the child's-
Special education;
Related services; or
Supplementary aids and services.
Q5:(maggie)
What are IDEA's stipulations regarding the provison of assistive technology with regard to classroom access, home acess, and cost to parent?
AT must be provided by the school district at no cost to the family.
AT must be determined on a case-by-case basis; it is required if needed to ensure access to free and appropriate public education (FAPE).
If the IEP team determines that AT is needed for home use to ensure FAPE, it must be provided
The student's IEP must reflect the nature of the AT and amount of supportive AT services required.
A parent is accorded an extensive set of procedural safeguards, including the provision of AT to the child.
5. What are IDEA'S stipulations regarding the provision of assistive technology with regard to classroom access, home access, and cost to the parents?
School districts are required under law to provide appropriate AT to students with disabilities when it supports their acquisition of a free and appropriate public education (FAPE). In order to support the inclusion and participation of students with disabilities in regular education classrooms, all IEP's developed for children identified as needing special education services, must indicate that AT has been considered to "to provide meaningful access to the general curriculum" (IDEA, 1997). More specifically, IDEA indicates that AT devices and services must be made available to a child with a disability if required as a part of the child's special education, related services or supplementary aids and service. AT must be provided by the school district at no cost to the family. The IEP team determines that AT is needed for the home and gives the support to the student as needed.
Q6:(lisa) 6. What does FAPE mean? What is IEP? FAPE is “Free Appropriate Public Education”. It is an educational right of children with disabilities in the United States that is guaranteed by the Rehabilitation Act of 1973[1] and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act(IDEA). Under Section 504, FAPE is defined as “the provision of regular or special education and related aids and services that are designed to meet individual needs of handicapped persons as well as the needs of non-handicapped persons. Under the IDEA, FAPE is defined as an educational program that is individualized to a specific child, designed to meet that child's unique needs. To provide FAPE to a child with a disability, schools must provide students with an education, including specialized instruction and related services that prepare the child for further education, employment, and independent living. IEP is “Individual Educational Plan”. This is a plan developed for an individual child who through educational testing is determined to have learning disabilities. By law, the child's educational plan is modified to accommodate the child's unique learning requirements. Approaches include placing the child in a self-contained classroom with a special education teacher, to having the child use the special education classroom for some subjects and be mainstreamed or in regular classes for other subjects. Sometimes the student is in all regular classes but receives help from a collaborative teacher and modifications on requirements for certain subjects. The child is to receive educational services in the least restrictive manner. Services also include speech and physical/ occupational therapies.
